To the uninitiated, the collection at the Barbed Wire Museum may seem like no more than bits of twisted, spiky metal, but those who have studied the history of this seemingly unremarkable item know differently. First patented in the 1870s and quickly moving into mass production, this wire became a cornerstone of property division and protection in the Midwest, keeping herds inside and property lines intact. Today, the museum holds thousands of examples of various styles of barbed wire, along with a large collection of fencing tools used over a century ago. Situated on the south side of Grass Park in La Cross, the museum is close to the Rush County Historical Museum and the Post Rock Museum.
